Every year during festive season, Flipkart and Amazon dangle exchange offers - "Get ₹20,000 off on your new iPhone by exchanging your old one!" The numbers look great on the banner. But are exchange offers actually giving you the best value for your old device? We crunched the numbers.
How Exchange Offers Work
When you choose an exchange during checkout on Flipkart, Amazon, or through Apple's trade-in programme:
- You get a discount on the new device you're buying.
- The discount is determined by their assessment of your old device's value.
- The "exchange value" is credited - you cannot receive cash, only a purchase discount.
- Their valuation is typically based on a model similar to insurance write-offs - conservative and buyer-favouring.
Real Example: iPhone 13 128GB in Good Condition
Flipkart Exchange
Flipkart's exchange value for an iPhone 13 128GB in good condition during a recent sale: ₹21,000 (credited toward a new purchase).
Amazon Exchange
Amazon's exchange valuation for the same device: ₹19,500–₹22,000 depending on the sale period and active promotional boosts.
Apple Trade-In
Apple India's trade-in credit for iPhone 13 128GB: approximately ₹18,000–₹22,000 in Apple Store credit (only usable toward Apple products).
Selling on QuickGadgets
Current market price for iPhone 13 128GB in good condition: ₹24,000–₹30,000 in actual cash, paid immediately via UPI.
The Maths
Using Flipkart exchange to buy a new iPhone 15 (let's say ₹79,900):
- You pay: ₹79,900 − ₹21,000 = ₹58,900
Selling separately and buying the same iPhone 15 at the same sale price:
- You receive ₹27,000 cash for your iPhone 13.
- You pay ₹79,900 for the iPhone 15 (or negotiate a separate deal).
- Net cost: ₹79,900 − ₹27,000 = ₹52,900
- Saving: ₹6,000 vs exchange offer
When Exchange Offers Can Make Sense
Exchange offers aren't always the wrong choice. They make sense when:
- The exchange value is inflated via a promotional boost (sometimes exchanges offer above-market for a single sale event - check the numbers that day).
- You don't want the friction of a separate selling process.
- Your device is in poor condition (damaged devices often get better value through exchange than open market).
Our Recommendation
Before accepting any exchange offer, take 5 minutes to get a quote on QuickGadgets. If the difference is ₹3,000 or more, selling separately is worth it. If it's under ₹2,000, the convenience of exchange may be worth it to you. Make an informed decision rather than defaulting to exchange because it's built into checkout.
