How to Wipe Your iPhone Before Selling: Complete Data Safety Checklist

Selling your iPhone without properly wiping it can expose your bank accounts, photos, and messages to strangers. Here's the exact checklist to follow.

By QuickGadgets Team · 23 June 2026

Before you hand over your iPhone to any buyer, you must properly wipe it. Failing to do this correctly has led to real cases in India where sellers' banking apps, WhatsApp messages, and private photos remained accessible to buyers. This checklist covers every step - don't skip any of them.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

A factory reset sounds simple, but if you skip the iCloud sign-out step, the device remains locked to your Apple ID even after the wipe. The buyer gets a useless brick - which leads to disputes, chargebacks, and refund demands. Worse, if you forget to back up and wipe, your data stays on the device. iPhones are not automatically wiped by deleting apps or logging out of them.

Step 1: Back Up Your iPhone

Do this first, before anything else. You have two options:

Option A - iCloud Backup (Easiest)

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi
  2. Go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup
  3. Tap Back Up Now
  4. Wait until "Last backup: Today" shows with a recent timestamp

Option B - Mac or PC Backup (More Complete)

  1. Connect iPhone to your computer via cable
  2. On Mac: Open Finder, select iPhone in sidebar → Back Up Now
  3. On Windows: Open iTunes → select device → Back Up Now

PC backup captures everything including Health data and messages that iCloud backup may not include.

Step 2: Unpair Your Apple Watch

If you have an Apple Watch paired to this iPhone, unpair it first. Go to the Apple Watch app → My Watch → your watch name → Unpair Apple Watch. This creates a backup of your watch and removes the pairing before you wipe the phone.

Step 3: Remove Your iPhone from Trusted Devices

This step is often overlooked. Go to Settings → [your name] and scroll down to see all devices logged in with your Apple ID. Note this list - after you wipe the phone, it should no longer appear here.

Step 4: Sign Out of iCloud (Most Critical Step)

This is the single most important action. Skipping this leaves Activation Lock enabled, making the device worthless to the buyer.

  1. Go to Settings → [your name]
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Sign Out
  3. Enter your Apple ID password when prompted
  4. Choose whether to keep a copy of your data on the device (choose "Keep on iPhone" - it'll be wiped next)
  5. Tap Sign Out, then confirm

Step 5: Disable Find My iPhone

Find My is usually disabled automatically when you sign out of iCloud, but confirm it:

  1. Go to Settings → [your name] → Find My
  2. Tap Find My iPhone
  3. Toggle it off

If it's still on after signing out, you've not completed the iCloud sign-out correctly. Repeat Step 4.

Step 6: Remove Your SIM Card

Use the SIM ejector tool (or an unfolded paper clip) to remove your SIM before the wipe. Once the phone is wiped, you won't need to access it to remove the SIM, but it's easy to forget during handover.

Step 7: Factory Reset the iPhone

  1. Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
  2. Tap Erase All Content and Settings
  3. Enter your passcode if prompted
  4. Confirm by tapping Erase iPhone
  5. The phone will restart, show the Apple logo, and boot into the initial setup screen (the "Hello" screen)

At this point, the device is clean. There is no personal data on it. The buyer will need to set it up with their own Apple ID.

Step 8: Verify the Wipe Worked

After the reset completes and the iPhone shows the "Hello" setup screen:

Quick Checklist Summary

Once all eight boxes are checked, your iPhone is ready for safe handover. QuickGadgets.in partners are trained to verify these steps at pickup - but completing them yourself ensures a smooth, fast transaction.
