Every year, thousands of iPhone sales in India fall through - or sell for a fraction of fair value - because of one thing: iCloud lock, also called Activation Lock. If you're planning to sell your iPhone, understanding iCloud lock and removing it correctly is the single most important step you can take. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is iCloud Lock / Activation Lock?
Activation Lock is a security feature built into all iPhones. When you enable Find My iPhone, your Apple ID becomes linked to the device. If someone tries to erase or reactivate the phone without your Apple ID and password, they can't - the phone shows a lock screen demanding the original owner's credentials.
This is excellent anti-theft protection. But it means a buyer cannot set up your old iPhone unless you remove your Apple ID first. An iCloud-locked iPhone is worth near zero to any buyer - they have no way to use it.
How to Remove iCloud Lock Before Selling
Method 1: Sign Out (Recommended)
- Back up your data first (iCloud Backup or via Finder/iTunes).
- Go to Settings → [Your Name].
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Enter your Apple ID password when prompted.
- Choose what data to keep on the device (or remove all - you have a backup).
- Tap Sign Out to confirm.
After signing out, Find My iPhone is automatically disabled and the Activation Lock is removed. The phone can now be set up by a new owner.
Method 2: Erase All Content and Settings
Alternatively, after signing out of iCloud, you can do a full factory reset:
- Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings.
- This returns the phone to factory state - clean slate for the buyer.
Important: Do not factory reset before signing out of iCloud. If you erase while still signed in, the Activation Lock remains and the new owner will be locked out.
When to Remove the iCloud Lock
Do NOT sign out of iCloud until payment is confirmed and in your account. Here's the right sequence:
- Get your quote and book a pickup.
- At inspection, the pickup partner verifies the device is working correctly.
- Payment is initiated via UPI.
- Once you see the payment in your UPI app, sign out of iCloud and hand over the device.
QuickGadgets' pickup process is designed around this exact sequence - you're never asked to erase or sign out before payment lands.
What Happens If You Forget?
If you factory reset without signing out of iCloud, you'll need to unlock it remotely:
- Go to icloud.com/find on any browser.
- Sign in with the Apple ID that was on the phone.
- Select the device and click Erase Device.
- After erasing, select Remove from Account.
This removes the Activation Lock remotely even if you no longer have the physical device.
iCloud Locked Phones - Can You Still Sell Them?
If you've lost access to your Apple ID (forgotten password, changed email, etc.) and cannot remove the lock, your options are limited. Apple Support can sometimes help verify ownership and remove the lock - bring proof of purchase (original invoice, IMEI registered to your Aadhaar). This process can take days to weeks.
An iPhone with an irremovable iCloud lock should be disclosed honestly. QuickGadgets does not purchase iCloud-locked devices for resale, but your carrier or local repair shops may offer partial value for parts.
